Senegal – Bissap

Almost 90% of Senegalese citizens are Muslims, therefore juice counts for an essential part in a meal. Bissap is taken as a traditional dish, because it is a widely found and consumed juice starts with big restaurants and hotels to home made daily meals.

Since Bissap is widely used, on the small to large markets in Senegal you will find Senegalese women sell it to earn daily living

Apart from selling, some own big farms for the cultivation of Bissap and exporting to other countries.

Since this cuisine is essential to complete the diet, let us prepare it.

Preparation of Bissap

This walk through will explain the simple way of preparing Bissap with no ingredients;

  • 3-5 cups of bissap
  • 1-3 cups of baobab nuts
  • 8-10 cups of water
  • 1/2 kg of sugar
  • Start by boiling water until evaporation.
  • Add bissap into the boiling water.
  • Wait for 20 minutes so that they boil well.
  • Take from heat to cool.
  • Filter off to residue juice.
  • Serve cold with any meal
