Pakistan – Traditional Kofta Karahi (Lahore Special)

Kofta karahi is one of the famous dishes in Pakistan especially in Lahore. Kofta karahi is gravy with meatballs in it. It is cooked in karahi. Karahi is a round and deep cooking pot. The specialty of this dish is that it is cooked in gravy which give it extra flavor and texture. You can eat this with naan, chapati, boiled rice etc. Lahori kofta karahi is very famous in Pakistan people came from other cities to try the ”special kofta karahi”. Some people like to eat this as a breakfast. There are many types of kofta karahi:

  • spicy kofta karahi
  • chicken kofta karahi
  • beef kofta karahi
  • mutton kofta karahi
  • desi ghee kofta karahi
  • simple kofta karahi
  • vegetable kofta karahi

You can serve this dish on any occasion like weddings, parties etc. The flavor is out of the world and texture is super tender. This mouth watering dish makes you droll. The gravy cooks on low heat and prepared by adding onions, tomatoes, yogurt, cornflour, salt, red chili flakes, cumin, coriander, black pepper and other spices.


  • beef mince 1 kg
  • tomatoes 2 large
  • ginger paste 1 tbsp
  • garlic paste 2 tbsp
  • corn flour 2 tbsp
  • yogurt 2 cups
  • red chili flakes 2 tbsp
  • garam masala 1 tsp
  • turmeric 1 tsp
  • black pepper1 tbsp
  • ghee 1 cup
  • green chili 4 (chopped)
  • salt 2 tbsp

Method of cooking

Step 1

Take a large bowl and add beef mince, red chili flakes, turmeric, garam masala and mix well until all the things are combined and then keep it aside for 2 hours. After 2 hours take 3 tbsp of mixture and make balls and again keep it aside for 1 hour.

Step 2

Now take a large cooking pot and add ghee, green chili, salt, black pepper, yogurt, cornflour, ginger paste, garlic paste and tomatoes and cook for 15 minutes and mix well. Now take a fork and mash the tomatoes and again cook for 15 minutes on low heat.

Step 3

Now take a pan and fry the kofta ” meatballs” until dark brown and when all the koftas are fried add the koftas to the gravy. Serve with chapati.
