Kuwait – Mumawwash (Rice With Shrimp)

Mumawwash is one of the most delicious and tempting dishes in Kuwait. It is basically a dish that contains flavorful rice with green lentils and tops with dry shrimp. The rice and lentils with shrimp taste so good together. This is the most eaten dish of Kuwait. The texture of the rice is soft and chewy, the texture of lentils is mushy but they are mixed with rice, the texture of shrimp is a little bit dry but the flavor is so delicious. This dish contains onions and a variety of dry spices with some dry lemon and saffron. This dish is available at every restaurant because of its flavor and appetizing look. Mumawwash is also called rice with shrimp. The different spices that are mixed in it make the rice more flavorful. The aroma of this dish is so appetizing. The shrimp in it makes the dish so much special. People in Kuwait love seafood so that’s why people love this dish. Almost all the dishes of Kuwait (main course) contain seafood like Different types of fishes, Shrimp, Crab, etc. The most important part of the dish is the shrimp do not have overcooked otherwise it will ruin the taste of the whole dish. The saffron in it adds a unique flavor to the dish which is so delicious. The dish is incomplete without shrimp. You can serve this to parties, eid, gatherings, and many other occasions as the main course. You can serve this with:

  • Hot sauce
  • Yogurt dip

This dish is very healthy so if you are a healthy meal lover you have to try it once. The rice is a rich source of carbohydrates, the green lentils are low in calories and rich in iron, the shrimp provides a high amount of protein, minerals, and vitamins. You can have this dish anytime as a breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or even as a snack. You can top this dish with some fresh green herbs(coriander, rosemary, mint, etc) to make it a more appetizing and delicious dish.


Kuwait is very popular because of its delicious cuisine and also very famous because of its culture. The culture of Kuwait is closest to Bahrain. The seafood of Kuwait has been the backbone of Kuwait for centuries and till now.

  • 1 cup green lentils (soaked in water)
  • 1/2 kg shrimp (peeled)
  • 1 kg rice
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 2 tsp red chili flakes
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 cup oil
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 2 onions (sliced)
  • 1 tbsp dry coriander
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp saffron
  • 2 dries lemons


Take a bowl and add the shrimps, red chili flakes, and turmeric and then rub the shrimps with the spices and then cover it, and leave it for 15 minutes. Take a deep cooking pot and add the rice and 1 liter of water in it and boil until the rice is cooked.

Now take a pan and add the oil and onions and sautee it until the onions got caramelized and then add the tomato paste in it and mix it and cover for 10 minutes. Now add the cumin, dry coriander, yogurt, dry lemons, salt, and saffron in it and mix it for 15 minutes. Now add the shrimps in it and again cover it for 15 minutes.

Now take a deep cooking pot and add the rice to the bottom of the pot. Now add the shrimp and green lentils gravy on top of it and mix until all the things are fully combined. Now add the rice to the plate place the shrimps on top and some fresh herbs on top.
