Tunisian – Kamounia


Tunisia is famous for its spicy and saucy cuisines and this dish which I am about to explain is no shy to these things. Kamounia is an lamb stew which is made by onions , garlic , tomato paste and adding many spices together. The taste with all these things makes this dish special and so lovable. It is a main course dish and has a huge demand in all of Tunisia and its restaurants. The specialty of this dish is that it is so easy to make and its outcome is even more tasty. It is loved in all of Tunisia and has a good place in its top cuisines. You can also add rice to this dish which gives another dimension to this dish. The saucy taste is incredible and with spices like cumin it elevates the flavor more. It is a dish which you can make in a very brief amount of time and enjoy very quickly. It is family special meal as well and the guests also enjoy eating it as well.


As we all know the food of Tunisia is inspired by the Mediterranean countries alongside this it is also famous for its spices. This dish came together because of both these things. People here wanted to create something that was easy and required only their own cultivated ingredients so they came up with this dish and once they added protein in it then this dish got more interesting. It is very common there to add tomatoes in their dishes along with its paste and once all these ingredients were combines something so incredible like this came into existence. It was not much popular in the start but after some time it became increasingly well known to all the people as it was saving them lots of time and less money and then it became a dish worth mentioning in their history and culinary world.


  • Olive oil 2 tbsp.
  • Lamb pieces
  • Onion 1
  • Tomato paste 2 tbsp.
  • Turmeric 1 tbsp.
  • Cumin 1 tbsp.
  • Harissa 1 tbsp.
  • Red Chilli powder 1 tsp
  • Garlic powder 1 tsp
  • Salt 1 tsp
  • Pepper 1 tsp
  • Parsley 2 tbsp. (Chopped)


  • Take a large pan and add olive oil in it.
  • Chop the onion and add it into the pan.
  • Cook until a brown color forms.
  • Add the lamb pieces in the pan.
  • Let it cook for 1 minutes
  • Now it is time to add the spices.
  • Add red chilli powder.
  • Add cumin.
  • Add turmeric.
  • Add garlic powder.
  • Add harissa.
  • Add tomato paste.
  • Lastly add salt and pepper.
  • Mix them all together and cook for about 10-15 minutes so that the meat is tender.
  • Add some water and reduce it at high heat.
  • Once reduced take it out in a dish and add parsley leaves on it.
  • Your dish is ready.
